School astronomy teaches that planetary distances have been constant for billions of years, their values happening to be whatever they are as if by chance without rhyme or reason.

    Bode's Law notes that the distances of the planets from the Sun follow a simple mathematical pattern. The law holds true for Mercury, Venus, Earth, the asteroids, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. Neptune and Pluto are perhaps the only exceptions to this law among the eleven planetary and dwarf planetary bodies in the solar , the Canadian astronomer Michael Ovenden proposed the law.
